Get to Know the People on Preston

Mina Martello and Cristina Forieri

"Ours is the epitome of a family business that continues to thrive thanks to personalized service. Vasto Dry Goods Limited, initially focusing on fine household linens, was founded forty-five years ago by my mother and Cristina’s grandmother, Anna Gumari, who ran it out of her Little Italy home before moving the shop to Preston Street. She then expanded into children’s dresswear plus fabrics, imported underwear and shoes. Vasto has been a staple in the community ever since. My daughter and I both like to say we were born into this business and I can honestly say we love working together." ~ Mina Martello

"Our family has a longstanding connection to Preston Street. My grandparents came here in 1961 from the Abruzzo region of Italy; they were drawn to the area because of the Italian community, so it was a perfect fit. We’ve stayed because of the community; there’s such a history with everyone. That sense of community even inspired me to join the BIA Board, to represent the perspective of family-run businesses." ~ Cristina Forieri

"Being born and raised in Little Italy, this is home to us. Parents who were dressed by my mom, including my former schoolmates, are now bringing their children for Cristina and I to dress. Like all our customers, they appreciate our ability to source niche items. I’m ecstatic to see the resurgence of Preston Street with all the new residential development. People are living and working here just like the old days." ~ Mina
